A COMPARISON OF DISTANCE EDUCATION DURING THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC AND TRADITIONAL FACE-TO-FACE UNIVERSITY EDUCATION

The Covid-19 pandemic, which originated in Wuhan, China, in late December 2019 and spread globally, has affected all areas of life, including education. Higher education institutions were temporarily closed in Türkiye, just like in many other countries. In this study we aimed to review the literature from the beginning of the pandemic considering distance education. We screened published articles, theses, books, and abstracts related to the subject from the Web of Science and Google Scholar databases. To broaden our literature search for Türkiye, we also explored the 'TR Dizin' webpage. Only studies written in Turkish and English were included in our study. The search keywords used as; 'distance education', 'online', 'face-to-face education', 'covid-19', and 'university students'. The adaptation to distance education led to a surge in the various studies on this issue. In particular, we found that students had both positive and negative perceptions about distance education. A primary issue highlighted as negative feedback is the difficulty in internet connection and computers. Conversely, the most stated positive perceptions were reducing travel and accommodation expenses, flexibility in timing and location, and the ability to revisit the course recordings on platforms such as from MS Teams and Zoom.
