Respectful maternity care is an approach that promotes changing practices to reduce inequalities in birth outcomes. Access to high-quality, dignified, and respectful maternity care is a fundamental human right worldwide. Every woman has the right to a positive birth experience and compassionate care provided by knowledgeable and skilled professionals who recognize that each woman, family, and newborn is unique and deserves individualized, dignified care. However, disrespectful and abusive maternity care services remain a significant issue in both developing and developed countries. Disrespect and abuse are major barriers to women seeking care in healthcare facilities, particularly in low-income countries. Therefore, there is a need for compassionate, reliable, competent, and trustworthy midwives to provide respectful maternity care. The aim of this review is to present an overview of respectful maternity care in accordance with the current literature.
