Journal of Emergency Medicine Case Reports - 2026;17(1):24-26
Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS) due to Diabetic Ketoacidosis (DKA) is a rare but fatal complication. A 65-year-old male patient, who was being monitored in the intensive care unit with a diagnosis of DKA, developed sudden respiratory distress, hypoxemia, rales, and bilateral widespread infiltration, and was diagnosed with ARDS. Despite the administration of invasive treatments, including intubation, lung-protective ventilation, antibiotics, and haemodialysis, the patient was subsequently dead. This case report emphasises the significance of timely recognition and appropriate treatment of ARDS that may arise due to DKA. To increase survival rates, these patients should be closely monitored.
