This letter highlights the potential contribution of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) to increased mortality in patients with multiple myeloma (MM). Type 2 diabetes mellitus is increasingly recognized not only as a metabolic disorder but also as a potential risk factor for hematologic malignancies. Multiple myeloma, a neoplastic proliferation of plasma cells producing monoclonal immunoglobulins, has been reported to coexist with T2DM in up to 10% of cases. Both conditions share overlapping pathogenic mechanisms such as chronic inflammation, insulin resistance, and dysregulation of the insulin-like growth factor (IGF-1) pathway. The presence of T2DM may thus accelerate myeloma progression and worsen clinical outcomes.
