Auditory hallucinations are experiences perceived by individuals as different from their own thoughts and occurring in the absence of any external stimulus. These voices, which are not actually heard, are generally associated with an individual's own inner speech and may occur in approximately 10% of the general population over the course of a lifetime. Although auditory hallucinations may occur in various conditions such as psychiatric disorders, neurodegenerative diseases, substance use/withdrawal, and sleep disorders, they are considered among the main symptoms of schizophrenia.
