COMPARISON OF BRAIN AND LATERAL VENTRICLE VOLUME IN PATIENTS WITH DIABETES, HYPERTENSION AND OBESITY WITH VOLBRAIN

Aim: We aimed to investigate the differences in ventricular and brain volume, indicators of brain atrophy, in metabolic diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, and obesity compared to a healthy group. Materials and Methods: This retrospective study included 111 individuals (30 diabetes, 30 hypertension, 20 obesity, and 31 healthy controls). Volumetric measurements were performed using the volBrain method. Data were analyzed using IBM SPSS 26.0 software. Results: In the gender comparison, brain, white matter, and gray matter volumes were significantly higher in males than in females within the diabetes and hypertension groups (p < 0.05). In the obesity and healthy control groups, only the total brain volume was significantly higher in males (p = 0.011 and p = 0.043, respectively). In the general comparison between diagnostic groups, no statistically significant differences were observed in terms of brain (p = 0.401), white matter (p = 0.075), gray matter (p = 0.941), and lateral ventricle volumes (p = 0.148). Conclusion: While no significant changes were detected in brain and ventricular volumes when comparing metabolic diseases with the control group, it was observed that volumetric differences between genders (in favor of males) were preserved across all groups. In future studies, we intend to bring a new perspective to the literature by incorporating cognitive tests into the process.
