IDENTIFYING HIGH-RISK BODY PROFILES FOR PILONIDAL SINUS DISEASE: A SOMATOTYPE-BASED CLINICAL ASSESSMENT

Aim: The aim of this study is to determine the somatotype and body compositions of patients with pilonidal sinus (PS) and to determine in which body structure pilonidal sinus is more common. Materials and Methods: 80 male patients diagnosed with PS were included in the study. Somatotypes were calculated by the Heath-Carter method. Number of orifices, daily sitting time, fat ratio, muscle ratio, bone mass, length of hospital stay (LHS) and disease duration of patients with PS were recorded. Results: According to the Kruskall Wallis H test results, statistically significant differences were found between somatotypes in terms of weight, Body Mass Index (BMI), anthropometric measurements for calculating somatotype, somatotype components and muscle rate (p<0.05), while no statistically significant differences were found between somatotypes in terms of age and height (p>0.05). As a result of Post hoc test conducted to find out from which somatotype statistically significant differences in weight, Body Mass Index (BMI) and muscle ratio values resulted, it was found that central somatotype caused statistically significant changes (p<0.05). It was found that patients with central somatotype had more abscess than other somatotypes (88.9%). According to Spearman's Rho correlation analysis results, it was concluded that the number of orifices was not affected by BMI, sitting time, fat ratio, muscle ratio, bone mass and disease duration. Conclusion: This study demonstrates that individuals with larger body frames, a tendency to gain weight easily, rapid fat accumulation, and broader shoulders may have an increased risk of developing PS disease.
