The primary aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of sociodemographic characteristics on oral hygiene habits and the level of knowledge regarding oral and dental health among patients referred for periodontal treatment. A questionnaire was administered to 220 adult volunteers (113 females, 107 males) aged 18 years and older, who applied to the Faculty of Dentistry at Ondokuz Mayıs University with various dental complaints and were determined, upon clinical examination, to require periodontal treatment. The questionnaire included items assessing participants' sociodemographic characteristics, oral hygiene habits, and knowledge of oral and dental health. The analysis revealed that age, gender, educational level, and socioeconomic status significantly influenced participants' oral hygiene behaviors and knowledge levels. Younger and more highly educated participants demonstrated more regular toothbrushing habits and higher levels of oral health knowledge, whereas participants with lower incomes and those residing in rural areas exhibited lower awareness and poorer oral hygiene practices. Furthermore, male participants exhibited less favorable behaviors than female participants with respect to tongue cleaning, dental floss use, and regular dental check-ups. The findings indicate that sociodemographic characteristics play a significant role in shaping oral hygiene habits and knowledge levels. It is essential to implement community-based educational and awareness programs to correct improper practices, address knowledge gaps, and promote preventive oral health behaviors, particularly among individuals with lower educational attainment and income levels.
