RISK ASSESSMENT OF OCCUPATIONAL ACCIDENTS IN A PRIVATE HOSPITAL: A FINE-KINNEY APPROACH

Objective: The aim of this study is to evaluate occupational accidents among healthcare workers using the Fine-Kinney method and to propose mitigation strategies. Methods: The study universe encompasses occupational accidents reported by healthcare workers in a private hospital in Ankara between 2019 and 2024. Data were retrieved from the hospital's occupational safety unit to calculate probability, frequency, and severity scores, facilitating the determination of risk levels and essential precautions. Results: Among the 245 reported incidents, 69.79% were classified as 'significant risk' and 5.71% as 'high risk.' The majority of reports were submitted by nurses, physicians, laboratory technicians, cafeteria staff, and cleaning personnel. Regarding accident types, sharp object injuries were the most frequent at 41.60%, followed by falls (16.30%), physical accidents (9.40%), and biological exposures (6.90%). Conclusion: The findings indicate that occupational accidents among healthcare professionals often stem from behavioral and procedural non-compliance, such as improper handling of needles, incorrect disposal of medical waste, and inadequate use of personal protective equipment (PPE). These incidents not only result in workforce losses but also increase the likelihood of medical errors and compromise the quality of institutional healthcare. Consequently, it is imperative to institutionalize regular occupational health and safety training programs. To enhance both patient and employee safety, prioritizing corrective and preventive actions for high and significant risk categories, alongside systematic monitoring of potential risk factors, is strongly recommended.
