We aimed to evaluate the short-term outcomes of the tension-free vaginal tape (TVT) procedure for female urinary incontinence, comparing with Burch colposuspension. A retrospective analysis was performed on 37 patients who underwent TVT (n=17) or Burch colposuspension (n=20) for stress urinary incontinence. The diagnosis of incontinence was based on specific questionnaires and physical examinations including cough stress test, Q-tip test, but without preoperative urodynamic verification. The primary cure rate was estimated to be 70 % for the Burch procedure and 76% for the TVT. The operation time, hospital stay and post operative analgesic need for TVT was significantly less compared to Burch colposuspension. Although de novo detrusor instability was similar for the TVT and Burch procedure (17% vs 20% respectively), urinary retention was more common after the TVT procedure (23.5% vs 0%). we conclude that TVT should be considered first over other surgical procedures for SUI, because of its high cure rate, taken together with a shorter operation time and hospital stay and decreased analgesic requirement
