THE EVOLUTION OF FLASH RADIOTHERAPY: INSIGHTS FROM A COMPREHENSIVE BIBLIOMETRIC ANALYSIS

Introduction: To perform a comprehensive bibliometric analysis of FLASH Radiotherapy (FLASH RT) research to map its intellectual landscape, identify key trends, and delineate the collaborative structures driving its evolution as a promising field in oncology. Methods: A systematic search of the Web of Science Core Collection database was conducted for publications from 1980 to 2024, resulting in 2,584 documents. The dataset was analyzed using the Bibliometrix R package to examine publication trends, thematic evolution, influential contributors, and international collaboration networks. Results: The analysis revealed an exponential growth in research (12.3% annually), especially since 2013. A significant thematic shift from foundational radiobiology to clinical applications was identified, marked by the rise of keywords like "clinical trial," "toxicity," and "quality of life." A core intellectual structure was defined, centered around key journals and influential preclinical studies. A strong transatlantic collaboration network, led by institutions in the USA and Europe, appears to be an important contributor to scientific productivity and knowledge dissemination. Conclusion: FLASH RT has rapidly evolved from a preclinical concept into a rapidly expanding and increasingly clinically oriented research field. The field's trajectory is defined by strong international collaboration that is accelerating its translation toward the clinic, positioning FLASH RT as a potential paradigm shift in cancer treatment.
